Community Conversations
CAPO Community Conversations
Our state's current budget crisis and cuts impact the clients we serve and our ability to provide essential services to vulnerable Oregonians. In partnership with Oregon Thrives, CAPO is working with key organizations concerned about equity and economic security to help create the conditions needed for Oregonians to have the opportunity to thrive
We invite you to join us for our Community Conversations - a critical briefing on the current state budget crisis and a beginning to the conversation about how we can unite together to reduce its impact.
Community Conversations accomplish the following:
- Reality Check-In: Raise community awareness of the fiscal environment, factors driving it and what options are being considered.
- Writing the Story Together: Improve our understanding of how our organizations' ability to serve is interconnected, collaborate more resourcefully, and share the strategies we are developing
- How to Tell Our Story: Find ways to effectively communicate to decision makers what the impact of severe service reductions will mean in their community and ways they can help prevent or mitigate the effects.

Each Community Conversation meeting runs about 3.5 hours. It typically includes presentations from elected officials and local leaders, a how-to presentation on effectively "telling our story", Oregon State budget overview and group strategy discussions. Attendees come away from the Conversation with handouts, information, tools, local and state contacts, and possible plans for future activities aimed at strengthening the human services network in Oregon.
Host the first Community Conversation in your area. CAPO works closely with host organizations to coordinate each Conversation. Host organizations typically provide:
- Time commitment
- Staff commitment
- Location/refreshments
- Connections to other local organizations
- Promoting the conversation
Community Action agencies throughout Oregon are partnering with CAPO to host local Conversations. Community Conversations have already been held in Hillsboro, Oregon City, Medford, Grants Pass, Roseburg and North Bend and were well received. The next Conversations are currently being planned in the following locations:
- Salem
- Corvallis
- McMinnville
- Portland
